Shane sat with Bayley at Mel’s Diner on Highland and Hollywood Boulevard, eating a late lunch. He had been spending almost every day with his daughter after she got out of school, getting to know everything about her. He found out she liked dance, running track, and she was a wiz when it came to math. He found out she loved to read, and he also found out she was in line for getting a college scholarship and a free ride through private school when she goes to high school, if she continued to get straight A’s. Bayley was so smart, and he was proud of the path she was taking. She wasn’t into any street stuff, and he wanted her to keep it that way.

“So, have you talked to your mother since she had your granny pick you up from the mall?” Shane asked as he squirted ketchup onto his burger.

Princess had been missing for a few days and Shane thought that wasn’t unusual. He wasn’t surprised that she had been gone a couple days, but he was surprised at the fact that she hadn’t called anyone. Mama Shane hadn’t spoken with her, Bayley hadn’t spoken with her, and she wasn’t answering any of Shane’s calls. He wanted to know what was going on, so he made a mental note that he would go by her house and see. He wasn’t going to be paying her any money if she was going to be slacking on her motherly duties again.

“Nope… And when she called me, she sounded weird. Like she had been crying. It’s probably her boyfriend again.”

“You know her boyfriend’s name?” Shane asked.

“I guess his name is Rag. That’s what I hear her call him. He never spoke to me before, but he’s a weirdo, and nothing like you, Daddy.” Bayley sipped her chocolate shake.

Shane had heard Rag’s name buzzing in the streets. He had heard Rag was trying to come up in the prescription drug game but didn’t have a connect. He had some of his boys hit Shane up about him getting some work, but Shane didn’t want to be his plug. Rag was from the east side, and Shane didn’t mess with niggas on the that side. He thought they were grimy and sloppy when it came to business. He didn’t want to associate himself with any of that because he wasn’t trying to get locked up again. Therefore, he decided to stay in his lane and not fuck with outsiders.

“Well, everybody can’t be a fly dude like your dad. But I’ll go see what’s up, though, once we leave here.”

“Okay… I can’t stand her ass, but I hope she’s okay.” Bayley shrugged.

Shane shook his head. “What’s up with you and all this cursing? I’mma find your mama, I’m sure she’s good.”

The two of them finished their lunch and then headed back to the city to see what was going on with Princess.
